Bloomberg TV Canada features segment on HockeyTech’s new player and puck tracking system, showcasing how the company is “Bringing Big Data Analytics to the Ice Rink”

Bloomberg’s Michael Bancroft visited the home of HockeyTech, a Waterloo Ontario-based startup that has designed a system to track and analyze every event that occurs in a hockey game. The company aims to bring a radically expanded depth of statistical analysis to all levels of organized hockey.
“Hockey is a blend of speed and motion unlike any other in professional sports”, says Bancroft in the TV segment. “That’s one reason why it has been a frozen frontier for advanced statistical analysis until now.” He adds, “HockeyTech is developing a way to gather millions of bits of information about the game and visualize them in real time.”
HockeyTech’s system puts a computerized tag on the players and embeds a chip in the puck, enabling the real time tracking of the position on the ice for every player and the puck at any given instant of time. It then automatically captures game events (e.g., shots, goals, time on ice, passes, puck possession, speed, distance, zone entries, and more). With the help of location tracking technology from HockeyTech partner Quuppa, over 40 million rows of data are captured in every game, allowing for even more advanced statistical analysis of hockey games.
“I think at some point, as we gather more of this data and get more experience with it, it might even change the way the game is played”, predicts HockeyTech CEO Stu Siegel in closing the TV segment.
